Shaping futures through reading: Celebrating the end of our Year 7 reading project

Posted 15th June 2026

Since February, a select group of Year 7 students have successfully completed the Shaping Futures Reading Project, an exciting initiative in partner ship with The University of Liverpool designed to develop key reading skills.

Throughout the project, students engaged with a range of challenging and thought-provoking texts, building their confidence as readers while developing the skills needed to access the wider curriculum. By explicitly teaching vocabulary, students were able to broaden their understanding of ambitious language and apply new words in both their reading and writing. Through focused inference activities, they learned how to read between the lines, drawing conclusions from evidence and deepening their understanding of characters, themes and ideas.

A particular focus of the project was helping students become active readers who think carefully about meaning. Students practised summarising, questioning and discussing texts, enabling them to engage more deeply with what they read and develop greater independence as learners. Joanne Moorehead, Higher Education Progression Advisor said "It was a genuine pleasure to work with Dixons Croxteth again. The Year 7s stayed curious and engaged throughout the 12 weeks, the student advocates loved working with them and they were an absolute credit to the school."

We would like to congratulate the Year 7 students for their hard work and commitment throughout the programme. The Shaping Futures Reading Project has highlighted the power of reading to unlock knowledge, build confidence and create opportunities for the future.
