Duke of Edinburgh 2026

Posted 16th June 2026

This year, Year 9 completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition in Edale, in the Peak District—an area known for its beautiful rural landscapes, stunning views, and trails running through both peaks and valleys.

It was certainly a challenging expedition, with heavy rain for much of the trip. However, the weather did not dampen spirits. Throughout the two days, students showed fantastic resilience, determination, and positivity, supporting one another every step of the way.

Over the course of the expedition, students walked approximately 10 miles. Day one included a steep climb to the top of Mam Tor. Although the views were limited due to the weather, morale remained high, with students singing Disney songs—Frozen proving especially popular—and responding proudly to the familiar call, “What do we do at Dixons?” with “We climb mountains.”

Teamwork was at the heart of the experience. Students shared responsibilities, including navigating with maps and compasses, and showed real care for one another by swapping heavier bags and sharing snacks to keep energy levels up. At camp, they worked brilliantly together to put up and take down tents, demonstrating both independence and cooperation.

The evening was a real highlight. Students prepared and enjoyed a range of meals together, from hot dogs and bacon butties to ramen noodles and pesto pasta. When the rain eased, there was time to relax—playing football and frisbee, and gathering around the fire pit to toast marshmallows and make s’mores.

Despite a restless night due to the weather, students approached day two with the same positive attitude. They continued their journey through muddy valleys with smiles on their faces and a real sense of determination.

Throughout the expedition, members of the public spoke highly of our students’ manners and behaviour, which was lovely to hear and reflects the values we promote every day at the academy.

With the expedition section now complete, students will continue working towards their Physical, Volunteering, and Skills sections.

A huge well done to our Year 9 students—we are incredibly proud of you!
